Coast Guard begins ice-breaking operations on Great Lakes
USCG Sector Northern Great Lakes commenced Operation Taconite this morning with USCG Cutter Mackinaw breaking ice on western Lake Superior, according to a news release. The Mackinaw is assigned to clear the shipping lanes for the twin ports of Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (KDAL) – On Monday, the U-S Coast Guard began ice breaking in harbors around the Great Lakes to prevent newly formed ice from hindering commercial vessel traffic.
