Leo XIV held his first Mass as pope in the Sistine Chapel on Friday, in what was a private service for the 132 voting cardinals who elected him as the 267th leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics a day earlier.

Vatican City • At a Mass in the Sistine Chapel on Friday attended by the cardinals who had elected him their leader the day before, Pope Leo XIV spelled out his missionary vision for the church. But first he told the cardinals that his leadership would continue to depend on them.

Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Mass this morning following his election, calling on the Church to focus on areas where there is a "lack of faith". It followed his first address yesterday - when the Chicago-born pontiff touched on "peace" and "unity".
