According to state filings, the nonprofit health care provider will cut more than 200 positions across 15 hospitals and clinics. The layoffs took effect Sept. 17 and were disclosed in WARN notices filed Oct. 6 with the California Employment Development Department.

The 1977 shutdown, which held the record for the longest in U.S. history for just 12 months, was sparked by disagreements over whether Medicaid should fund abortion care. Democrats held majorities in both chambers of Congress.

The federal government officially entered a shutdown at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday amid an impasse on Capitol Hill over competing congressional spending bills.

Affected agencies include the departments of Homeland Security, Education, Energy and Health and Human Services, among others, according to a Justice Department filing.

“The mood music hasn’t been helped by the government shutdown, which is now entering its 10th day. And the fear is that the longer it lasts, the worse the economic impact will be, as increasing numbers of workers miss paychecks from here,” Jim Reid and the team at Deutsche Bank said in a note this morning.

The government shutdown will last at least until at least next week, as the Senate adjourned until Tuesday after another round of failed votes to reopen the government.
