Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer dropped his threat to block a Republican spending bill, opening the way to avoid a US government shutdown.

Schumer said he would help advance a GOP spending bill because a shutdown "has consequences for America that are much, much worse."

Schumer's commitment comes a day after the top Senate Democrat said “Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate.”
