Just as the game seemed destined for penalties, Aitana Bonmatí popped up to score the winner. Spain will face England in Sunday’s final in Basel.
Aitana Bonmatí's swerving finish deep in extra time sent Spain into Sunday's UEFA Women's EURO 2025 final against England after a stubborn injury-hit Germany side so nearly took this last-four tie all the way in Zurich.
England is currently gunning for its second straight Women's Euro title, having won the 2022 tournament with another pair of extra-time wins. If Germany advances on Wednesday, it will be the same pair of teams in the final as well, but clearly nothing is going to be predictable given how some of these teams are playing.
Defending champions England needed a 96th-minute equalizer and a 118th-minute penalty in extra time to overcome Italy; while Spain also went to extra time against Germany and only progressed thanks to some late magic from Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí.
