Africa is adjusting to the new reality of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, with countries on the continent facing some of the highest export charges.

African trade flows may shift further away from the US after President Donald Trump announced a slew of new tariffs, the head of Citigroup Inc.’s regional office said.

South Africa exports mainly raw materials and minerals to China while importing manufactured and capital goods, running a trade deficit of $9.7bn in 2023. Diplomatically, South Africa has moved away from a tradition of non-aligned pragmatism.
