The attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more than 100,000 Japanese civilians, poisoned a generation of survivors and ushered in a precarious era of nuclear war.

In the absence of special events, the plane that bombed Hiroshima will quietly remain on display at the National Air & Space Museum's airport annex.

* Japan has so far recognised the total number of deaths from the bombings, including from radiation illness and injuries, as 344,306 in Hiroshima (as of August 6, 2024) and 198,785 in Nagasaki (as of August 9, 2024).
