The U.S. and Los Ticos tied 2-2 in regulation, and it was a 4-3 win in the shootout as goalkeeper Matt Freese may have just put himself in pole position to be the team's starting goalkeeper at the World Cup next year with numerous crucial saves.

The U.S. had a perfect group stage with three wins, and followed it up by besting former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas on penalties.

T he USMNT needed penalties to advance through the Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinals on Sunday but advance they did thanks to goals by Diego Luna and Max Arfsten during regulation and three saves by Matt Freese in the shootout along with shootout makes from Tyler Adams, Malik Tillman, Alex Freeman, and Damion Downs.
