Jan 29, 2025 · Leal-Hernandez, who goes by the nickname “Chapito Leal”, was indicted by a federal grand jury in California in May 2020. In a hearing on January 22, he was arraigned and entered a not-guilty plea. The judge granted the government’s request that he be held without bond pending trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 10, 2025.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Leal-Hernandez — who went by Chapito Leal — was a leader of the Beltran-Leyva faction of the Sinaloa Cartel for at least eight years.
