Every year, roughly from May through June, horseshoe crabs cover mid-Atlantic beaches to breed, attracting migratory shorebirds birds that feast on their eggs. Horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils, having existed largely unchanged for the past 445 million years—and they actually aren't crabs at all! Their closest living relatives are spiders and scorpions. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3QixBDB | National Aquarium

🔮What do you see in the orb? A tiny green but translucent orb rests on a sandy beach surrounded by sharp quartz grains of sand. You look closer. Within the orb, cloud-like movement swirls. As the movement within the orb continues, legs and the structures of a living creature begin to appear. The orb is an egg. The video transitions to a new shot of the same beach but now there are five eggs at different stages of hatching. In two of the eggs, the legs of the creatures inside churn and swirl. On

Horseshoe crabs get their name from a rounded carapace, or exoskeleton, that’s u-shaped like a horse’s shoe. They have jointed legs, a hard shell, an exoskeleton and a segmented body, but they don’t have antennae or a jaw. These arthropods are more closely related to spiders or scorpions than they are to what we think of as true crabs, and they are really fascinating (and important) creatures. Here are just a few reasons why. | Greater Cleveland Aquarium

Horseshoe crabs are one of the oldest creatures on Earth, and we need your help in protecting them! As horseshoe crabs approach shorelines to breed (a.k.a spawn), we tag them! The data collected in tagging is two-fold, allowing researchers to both monitor population movements and count how many and where males and females are spawning! Horseshoe crabs will continue to spawn through June, so keep your eyes peeled while strolling our beaches and report what you see to The United States Fish and Wi

Horseshoe crabs have been around for a half-billion years. They've survived disasters that wiped out most life on this planet, including dinosaurs. A secret to their longevity? Massive beach orgies. Every year, they deposit millions of eggs along the Atlantic Coast, providing protein-rich food for many endangered species — including red knots, who use it to fuel their epic 9,500-mile annual migration. The Center won protection for these shorebirds in 2014. The @Atlantic States Marine Fisheries C
