The Lafayette Escadrille was more than a squadron—it was the start of America's aerial legacy in World War I. Though only 38 Americans served directly in the unit, hundreds more flew with French squadrons as part of the Lafayette Flying Corps. They came from every corner of American society, bound by a shared belief in defending freedom. Many transferred to U.S. squadrons after 1917, but their roots remained in the skies over France. After the war, a memorial was built to honor their sacrifice.
