The 250-year-old shipwreck uncovered by storms on a beach in Sanday in February last year has been identified. All evidence points to it being the wreck of the Earl of Chatham, a former Royal Navy vessel called HMS Hind, which was wrecked in the Bay of Lopness in March 1788. Islanders removed the wood from the beach and it is now being preserved in a specially built tank on the island for further study and future preservation.
