Antarctic sea ice has historically shown a minimal long-term trend with high year-to-year variation. Scientists have largely attributed Antarctic sea ice behavior to natural variability. Beginning in 2016, however, Antarctic sea ice extent has mostly fallen below the 1981-2010 average, setting consecutive record low summer extents in early 2022 and 2023. Then in the austral winter of 2023, sea ice extent went off the rails—at one point falling more than 2 million square kilometers below the long

Over 90% of Earth’s ice mass is locked up in Greenland and Antarctica. As our greenhouse gas emissions warm the planet, those areas, along with glaciers worldwide, lose more ice, contributing to sea level rise. Watch the video to learn how many people are threatened by this phenomenon worldwide and how much global sea level is projected to rise by 2100. The data are in: Arctic sea ice likely reached its maximum extent for the year, at 14.88 million square kilometers (5.75 million square miles), the tenth lowest extent in the satellite record. This continues a long-term downward trend due to human-caused global warming. This wintertime maximum extent is roughly 770,000 square kilometers (297,300 square miles) below the 1981-2010 average, equal to missing an area of ice slightly larger than Texas and Maine combined. This February 25 maximum also

🌡A warming trend across Southcentral Alaska is expected over the next few days, bringing us out of a deep freeze and into more moderate temperatures! Here is an animation showing the Max Temperature Forecast for Saturday (11/30) through Tuesday (12/3). Along with the warming temperatures, there is the potential for light precipitation along the northern Gulf coast from Kodiak to Cordova. Mountain snow is expected at higher elevations while sea level locations will start as snow before transitio

🤔 What's going on with Arctic sea ice? Very simply, it's been in decline at least since satellites started recording it in November 1978, NOAA says. But researchers (along with planners, shipping companies, and residents) want to know when the Arctic will have its very first ice-free summer. While we don't know exactly when the Arctic will lose its summer ice, NOAA says, researchers agree on two major points: humans are greatly contributing to the loss of Arctic ice, and it's not too late to ac
