Is there anything cuter than juvenile swallows? These Purple Martins are fully grown, but still sporting the wide, grumpy looking beaks that are perfectly designed to show their parents where to deposit the food, and to cure your case of the Mondays. | The Raptor Trust

The American Oystercatcher we had in rehab was released this week! In a real "it takes a village" style effort, we'd like to thank a bunch of folks who helped along the way: Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet for donating tasty shellfish, the NYC Bird Alliance for keeping an eye on the nesting site, and TRT's own Sam Russo for trekking this little one back to its family. | The Raptor Trust

The Raptor Trust currently has THIRTY-FIVE baby woodpeckers in care! 🫶 The majority are Northern Flickers, but we also have Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy, and Pileated Woodpeckers. 😍 Woodpeckers require specialized diets, care, and husbandry to ensure that they can climb and forage for food on their own when they’re ready for release. Many of these woodpeckers are perfectly healthy babies that ended up at TRT after their trees were cut down during spring cleaning. ☹️ **Want to help woodpeckers and

We are excited to announce that The Raptor Trust is now on the Roundup app! This will make it easier than ever to help wild birds - just by donating your change. How does it work? You register a credit card via the RoundUp App, and each purchase you make on that card is rounded up to the next dollar - the change is donated to TRT. The average Roundup user donates $15-20 per month, but you can set a cap on the maximum monthly donation, giving you full control of your gift. Small change for you, g

Happy National Bird Day! ✨ While every day is Bird Day at The Raptor Trust, today is a special opportunity to celebrate birds and highlight the importance of protecting them and their habitats. It’s also the perfect time to feature our first admit of 2026—a beautiful White-throated Sparrow. Thanks to prompt evaluation and timely medication, this little songbird made a strong recovery and was released back into the wild where it belongs. Stories like this remind us why our work matters every day.

The Update: The Bayonne/Staten Island Eagle. We received this eagle for care a few weeks ago totally dehydrated and emaciated. The bird suffered from intestinal parasites, systemic infection and an older eye injury. It did not appear to have any noticeable fresh injuries and the x-rays showed nothing significant. We treated the bird for the parasites and infection and it has been gradually improving. It started indoors in a small enclosure and needed to be force fed. It is now outdoors, eating o

Offering enrichment is one component to keeping our birds' brains happy and active. For Dusky, that enrichment is a fun paper ball to pounce on. Letting her practice natural behaviors like catching "prey" keeps her happy and healthy. Don't worry, she was give a tasty mouse after. Yum! Who do you think had more fun, Dusky, or her trainer giggling in the background 😆 | The Raptor Trust

Happy Fourth of July! We celebrated by releasing this second year American Bald Eagle back into the wild. This Eagle came to us in May from our partners at Volunteers for Wildlife (@volunteersforwildlife) after a suspected fight with another Eagle. With a gnarly wound to its chest, our vet, Dr. Norton, had to visit multiple times to clean and protect this wound from getting infected. Thankfully, 23-451 healed up marvelously and was released by our Director of Rehabilitation, Cathy Malok, just in

Some enrichment is a little cheaper than others. Here, Dusky, an Eastern Screech Owl that lives permanently at The Raptor Trust, tries out her foraging skills in a pile of leaves. Did you know that while owls can see very well in low-light conditions, they have difficulty seeing things close to their face? Dusky uses the whisker-like feathers near her beak to feel around for the tasty wax worms in a tray of leaves. You may also notice she stands up tall to get as far away as possible to see the

When you're cute, you know you're cute. This Golden-Crowned Kinglet made sure to give us all his best angles before taking off. Migrating songbirds are one of our most common patients in the fall. We can get up to thirty warblers a day in peak season! All proceeds from Walk for Hawks and our silent auction, which goes live on October 15th at 5PM, directly support birds like this one and help get back into the wild. | The Raptor Trust

If you've been to our facility recently, you may have noticed a new face on display! Aretha is a Peregrine Falcon who has been recently moved onto display. Aretha can be seen sitting in the sunbeams on her high perches, watching guests, or working with our education team. Peregrine Falcons in New Jersey have made a remarkable recovery from near-extinction, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Once on the brink, these majestic birds of prey now find refuge in our area's urban environments, n

How do our resident birds stay cool in the heat? Sonny, our resident Barred Owl, is enjoying a cool drink of water. While raptors get the majority of their moisture intake from their food, it's important for them to have constant access to clean water for baths and cooling down! Some birds, like Bald Eagles Uno and Colonel, prefer to have fun in the sun! Here, they're enjoying a hose down to keep them cool. You can help wildlife during a heat wave by providing a pan of clean, fresh water. The bi
